"As I neared graduation and began a job search in earnest, I discovered (unsurprisingly) that this diverse work experience, coupled with my Knight Center education, would open many doors for me. " |
In addition to serving as EJ Magazine’s editor, which was an amazing experience that included writing, editing, mentoring, and strategizing, I used my time at the Knight Center to explore a variety of environment-related writing professions. I expanded my knowledge of magazine writing by reporting on environmental issues for Vance Publishing Corp., I interned in the press office at the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, and I worked as a communications assistant at the Michigan Environmental Council. I also greatly expanded my knowledge of web design by designing, creating and launching EJ Magazine’s first-ever web site, ejmagazine.com. As I neared graduation and began a job search in earnest, I discovered (unsurprisingly) that this diverse work experience, coupled with my Knight Center education, would open many doors for me. I am now exploring yet another facet of environmental communications as a grants writer for the Environmental Law & Policy Center, a legal/policy advocacy group that is based in Chicago and works throughout the Midwest and Great Plains. The knowledge and experience I gained at the Knight Center continues to help in my daily tasks to explain complex environmental issues to lay audiences. I am especially thankful that the Knight Center’s faculty and staff encouraged me to branch out from traditional environmental journalism classes/experiences. Taking an environmental law course, completing an internship at an environmental regulatory agency and working for an environmental non-profit all added greatly to my marketability upon graduation. —Katie Coleman |
