"In the ever-changing and competitive journalism industry, it is comforting to know we leave the program with the skills to land a job while pursuing a career that can make a difference." |
My first job following graduation was as a natural resources reporter at the Pinedale Roundup, a weekly community newspaper in Pinedale, Wyo. After nearly a year writing about Western Wyoming's diverse environmental issues and enjoying the beautiful Wind River Range, I accepted an outdoors reporter position with The Lakeland Times in Minocqua, Wisc., where I am now the sports and outdoors section editor. he unique coupling of the Knight Center for Environmental Journalism with Michigan State University's School of Journalism gave me the opportunity to learn about the specialized environmental reporting beat while also gaining experience in editing, feature writing, page design, photography and online journalism. As a writer and editor, I use a combination of these skills every day and commend the Knight Center for sending their environmental journalism graduates out into the workforce ready not only to report on environmental topics, but to pull their weight in the newsroom as well-rounded journalists. In the ever-changing and competitive journalism industry, it is comforting to know we leave the program with the skills to land a job while pursuing a career that can make a difference. |
