Alex Nixon

"The resources of Michigan State University's School of Journalism, matched with the expertise and experience of the staff of the Knight Center for Environmental Journalism, provide students with a solid and unique foundation on which to base a career in the rapidly evolving journalism field."

After earning a master's degree in journalism from Michigan State University in 2004, I landed a job as a business reporter with the Lansing-Jackson Business Review. The startup weekly published its first edition the week after commencement. I reported on manufacturing, transportation, state government and environmental regulation for the paper until December 2005 when it closed.

While job hunting in early 2006, I took on a few freelance assignments, including covering the North American International Auto Show in Detroit for the York (Pa.) Daily Record and writing a cover story for the Lansing City Pulse on mercury pollution from Michigan's power plants. In March this year I started working as the night/weekend editor for the Kalamazoo Gazette.
