"The Knight Center provides the strong background, experience and knowledge in journalism and the environmental sciences that produces the type of journalist who will enhance and further the field of environmental journalism." |
After graduating from Michigan State University in 2002, I earned my masters in health sciences specializing in health education/health promotion at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. During my masters program, I interned for the Department of Defense Global Emerging Infection Systems, where I developed the “Doctors Communicating to their Patients the Prudent Use of Antibiotics” workshop, which focused on enhancing doctors’ skills in communicating antibiotic resistance issues and the prudent use of antibiotics to patients. After graduating from Hopkins, I was a technical writer and analyst for the Annapolis Center for Science-Based Public Policy, where I researched and authored reports on the use of antibiotics in livestock and mercury in the environment. From there, I joined the U.S. Public Health Service. Initially, I served as a watch officer in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary’s Operations Center, and served as the HHS liaison desk officer to the Homeland Security Operations Center. In these positions, I tracked and assisted with HHS’ response to incidents and events, including the 2003 and 2004 hurricane seasons, the tsunami, the presidential inauguration and State of the Union addresses. In addition, I deployed to the G-8 Summit 2004 in Sea Island, Georgia, and the 2004 Republican National Convention. For the past year, I have been the plans coordinator for the Department of Homeland Security Science & Technology Directorate’s Office of Weapons of Mass Destruction and Incident Management. As the plans coordinator, I have developed, and continuously update, the contingency plans for responding to biological (and pandemic influenza), chemical, radiological/nuclear, explosions and cyber incidents and natural disasters (including hurricanes). In addition, during the 2005 hurricane season, I deployed to the FEMA National Response Coordination Center and the Principal Federal Official Cell in New Orleans for almost a month to represent my department in coordination efforts of the Federal response to the hurricanes, especially Hurricane Katrina. |
