Read below for information about:
From Oct. 12 to Oct. 15 in Roanoke, VA, Boot Campers will sharpen their environmental reporting skills in sessions that target reporters new to the beat but that are also valuable to veteran journalists. The sessions dovetail with the Society of Environmental Journalists national conference Oct. 15 to Oct. 19 in the same city.
Knight Center instructors and guest speakers will discuss investigative techniques, writing, ethics and current environmental issues. Among the highlights:
- Computer-assisted reporting will be taught by instructors. Lessons are structured for learning to obtain and make sense of environmental data.
- Attend an All Day Workshop: Covering climate change and our energy future in Rural America.
Twenty-two print, broadcast and online journalists will be considered in a competitive application process. There is no application fee.
Selected participants pay $195. Partcipants receive instruction and room and board during the Boot Camp. They also receive SEJ membership or renewal and registration for and accommodations during the SEJ conference.
Participants must pay for and arrange their own transportation to Virginia and meals during the SEJ conference.
Download the application form here. Application materials, which include a résumé, 250-word essay on why you want to attend the Boot Camp, and sample of your work (need not be environmental), are due July 21, 2008.
U.S. journalists of color can compete for fellowships to attend both the Boot Camp and SEJ conference. These fellowships will cover the entire cost of transportation, registration, room and board from Oct. 12, until the end of the SEJ conference on Oct. 19. Fellows must attend both events.
Fellowships are co-sponsored by Michigan State University's Knight Center for Environmental Journalism and the Society of Environmental Journalists.
Interested applicants should use this form instead of the regular application form. All materials are due July 21, 2008.
