EJ sweeps awards

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Seven EJ Magazine contributors were honored by the Detroit Press Club Foundation's 2007 Michigan Excellence in Journalism Awards on March 15 for works published in 2006.

EJ Magazine wins awards from the Society of Professional Journalists

The Region 4 Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists has once again recognized EJ Magazine and its staff. In the category of "best student magazine," the EJ Magazine staff received third place. This is the second consecutive year EJ has placed in this category.

In the category of "magazine non-fiction article," Yu-Ting Lin won first place for her "Environmental Evangelicals" article, and Carol Navarro and Mairin MacDonald won third place for their "Who Owns the Water?" article.

Yu-Ting's article will be forwarded to the national competition, for which winners will be announced in May.

Jim Detjen, the director of the Knight Center for Environmental Journalism, talked with Environment & Energy Television reporter Darren Samuelsohn about the state of environmental journalism on July 25. In the interview, Detjen discussed how new media is affecting the coverage of environmental issues, how coverage of environmental issues varies around the world and how journalists have covered the Bush administration's environmental record. EJ Magazine wins top honors

EJ Magazine, the student-produced magazine of the Knight Center for Environmental Journalism, won a first-place Society of Professional Journalists' award for best student-produced magazine in 2005! Congratulations to all of the many students, faculty and staff in the Knight Center who worked on the 2005 issues. This is a wonderful honor and marks the fourth time in the past three years that EJ Magazine has won a regional or national journalism award! All first-place winners from across the country will meet at a national competition this August.

Spring 2006:
EJ Magazine article takes third in AEJMC international news story contest

Patrick Wellever (BA 2006) took third place in the 2006 student international news story contest organized by the International Communication Division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC).

The award recognized Wellever's Spring 2005 article in EJ Magazine, "Agriculture Wars," which analyzes the social costs of China's environmental protection policies. The William Randolph Hearst Foundation recognized the same piece as a top student article.

Wellever will receive a $50 award, presented at the AEJMC's national convention in San Francisco this fall.

Documerica Web site launched

A project supported by Michigan State University’s Knight Center for Environmental Journalism sheds new light on a hidden trove of environmental images.

“This archive serves as a benchmark of historic environmental conditions in the United States,” said Knight Center Director Jim Detjen. “It’s our hope that bringing new attention to them will spark environmental news stories across the nation.”

Edward J. Meeman Award for environmental reporting given to Ken Ward Jr.

Ken Ward Jr., an environmental reporter at West Virginia’s The Charleston Gazette, has been awarded the 2005 Edward J. Meeman Award for environmental reporting.

The award is among the country’s most prestigious recognition of excellence in environmental journalism. It is one of the National Journalism Awards given by the Scripps-Howard Foundation.

Students win top radio award

Three Michigan State University students have earned first place in newscast/news features from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters for their newscast about the Red Cedar River.

The students reported and produced a weekly radio segment as part of the Radio Student Bureau, which started Fall 2005 with financial help from the Knight Center for Environmental Journalism.

Awards Ceremony to Highlight International Achievers

The director of the Knight Center for Environmental Journalism will be among 11 honored at the university’s annual international awards ceremony on Wednesday, March 29. James T. Detjen, director of MSU’s Knight Center for Environmental Journalism and co-founder and first president of the Society of Environmental Journalists, will receive the Ralph H. Smuckler Award for Advancing International Studies and Programs at MSU. The public ceremony was held on the third floor of the MSU International Center.

MSU journalism student wins one of top awards

Patrick Wellever, an undergraduate journalism student at Michigan State University, has been named one of the top collegiate feature writers in the nation for an article he wrote in the spring 2005 issue of EJ Magazine, a publication of the Knight Center for Environmental Journalism.

Wellever won 10th place in college feature writing and will be awarded a $500 scholarship by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation for his article, "Agriculture Wars: Social costs of China's environmental protection policies." The Hearst Foundation will also give a $500 contribution to the School of Journalism. More than 100 undergraduate journalism programs at American universities compete in the annual Hearst awards, which are the most prestigious awards in collegiate journalism."We are delighted that the Hearst Foundation has honored Patrick for his thoughtful and well written feature article," said Jim Detjen, director of the Knight Center and executive editor of the magazine. "This marks the third time in the past three years that EJ Magazine and its contributors have won state or national journalism awards."
